The History of Clan Dog Pound

Clan Dog Pound originally began as a Quake Clan during the glory days of Quake World. To this day considered by many die hards to be the best First Person Shooter of all time. Quake was the hottest game around, an incredible game that was way ahead of it's time.

Back then most servers were hosted on University networks, and players were defined as HPB's (High Ping Bastards and LPB's (Low Ping Bastards) relative to their latency. Most players with good internet connections played from school or work connections. In fact, the first "DoggySTyle" servers were hosted on the Drexel.edu network by Death_Dog. The competition was intense, there were hundreds of servers all over the world, playing all sorts of modifications of the game. One of those modifications was created by David "Zoid" Kirsh had released a modification called 3Wave CTF and it was spreading like wild fire.

I don't recall who the founding members of the clan were, but I'm pretty sure that Bad, Mad, MoOn, Smoke, Top, Black, Death and Blood were amongst the founding fathers. Most of which went on to compete in what was later to become some of the genres first true competitive leagues.

The Dog Pound enjoyed great success and went on to dominate 3wave CTF by winning 3 of 4 ICR Tournaments, and going undefeated in a Quake World match for close to 5 years. An accomplishment that few clans in any FPS have achieved.

Here is a quote from a clan we played back then:

Quote

QuakeWorld (aka. the Glory Days)

Crayola played a lot of QuakeWorld and won a lot of matches. At the time we retired to play Quake 2, we were ranked #2 behind our arch-nemesis Dog Pound, in a ranking system that ranked clans that participated in major tournaments and leagues. We would find ourselves in the #2 spot quite frequently over our history. We compiled a 31-4 record altogether in match play. We suffered a frustrating loss to Burning Chrome in a QWHPCL league match, a controversial (to us, anyway) loss to Western Alliance in an ICR2 league match, an embarrassing loss to CMD in the first round of the ICR2 playoffs, and a close loss to Death Clownz in a Shredfest league match.

After 3wave died off, a few of use went on to play a popular Quake mod called Thundewalker CTF. It was very similar to 3wave CTF with the addition of some power-ups, modified weapons, grappling hook and changes made to the scoring system. Although we never played it competively as a clan, we made several friends in the community that later played a key role in our early MMORPG experience.

MMORPG

Our first true MMORPG experience was Ultima Online. We played it for hours and days at a time. The game was truly unique and the whole sandbox experience was completely new to us. We primarily played as a small group, not as a guild and we mostly ganked people priding ourselves on making life miserable for everyone in our way.

After a few years in UO, we ended up playing EverQuest on the Morell-Thule server. Several of the old Thunderwalkers CTF players were on the server with us and we decided to create a guild. At the time we didn't feel like Dogpound really sounded very guild like, so we decided to name ourselves "ThunderWalkers". Little did we know the amount of success that we would experience and we became of of the top raid guilds on the server for several years. Experiencing all the end game content up till about the Planes of Power expansion, before moving on to other games.

After Everquest, we kept stayed in touch for several years through our forums and mailing lists. Everyone was of all over the place trying out different games that ranged from MMO's to First Person shooters. Some of us went on to play in successful Star Wars Galaxies(before Sony fucked it up), World of Warcraft and Shadowbane guilds, others kept a low profile focusing on RL. It wasn't until the release of Blizzards expansion to World of Warcraft that ThunderWalkers core members were re-united. Blizzard had recently implemented server transfers and the majority of us had Horde characters on various servers. We all ended up transferring our characters over to Drak'Thul and quickly became one of the servers premier raid guilds. ThunderWalkers is currently ranked the top guild on the server and continues to raid together until the next major third generation MMO is released.

The Return of Clan Dog Pound

Lots of us have been following Darkfall over the past few years. It's been a game that has been talked about since our Shadowbane days. The developers have made lots of promises to recapture many of the game dynamics that made UO and Shadowbane great PvP games. It's an original game and unlike most recent titles, it's not a World of Warcrap clone. We hope that Darkfall lives up to the hype and we're approaching the game with an open mind. Although the ThunderWalkers name has carried us through the various MMO's, we felt that Clan Dog Pound was a fitting name to go by once again. Mostly, because we still owned the domain name and because the majority of our players plan on rolling Orcs and Furries (a dog like race), heh.
